" ... It was not just a gathering.  It was a happening.  We've all been to meetings where a lot, perhaps even the majority, of the attendees were there simply to see or be seen.  After putting in an appearance they melted into the background and out the door.  No so with our reunion.  Everyone there was genuinely glad to be there to share old times and memories.  Egos were left at home.  The true family that we were in those days back then reappeared ... "

John Moncrief

Bud Kennedy remembers KFJZ in a 1988 Star-Telegram column ... "In the beginning, there was Marky Baby. Other Fort Worth folk with longer memories will remember Willie Nelson on KCUL, or the WFAA Early Birds, or some big-band show from high atop some long-gone hotel. Here in the Star-Telegram's Thirty Something Bureau, though, we remember Marky Baby and the KFJZ Top 60 hits, a 1960s teenager's only link to the civilized world. In 1964, there was no MTV. No Entertainment Tonight.  If there was a Rolling Stone, Skillern's Drug didn't sell it. For us ... " (click to read more)

Bud Kennedy's March 8 column on KXOL 1360 ...
Ghost of radio past is on the air:
Weekend AM radio is all pitches -- either baseball or sales. AM radio is the outpost of cures for the sick, treatments for your bug-infested azaleas and home loans for the hopelessly credit-impaired.
So you can imagine my surprise last Saturday, when I went driving near Lake Texoma and tried to tune in a station that wasn't selling Body Solutions. Instead, I wound up tuning back in time. It was an AM radio version of the `Twilight Zone.'
... First, I heard a radio commercial for ... " (click to read more)

Please notify me when the videotapes are available. The Tennessee branch of the Holstead Family would like several copies. We talked to Josh twice during the party, twice immediately after and once this morning. We were pleased to hear that he had a wonderful time last night. Your party was a great success and if you decide to have another, perhaps the rest of us will be able to attend.  Tiffany Holstead Karkhoff

I hope you guys have a great time... Sorry I can't be there... Jeff Davis

Sorry I could not be here for the first KFJZ Radio Reunion circa 2001.  Sure hope I can join you next year.  My wife Bobbi was born in Galveston making her a full-fledged Texan.  I got my start in the thriving metropolis of Atlanta, Texas, population 3000 (including the cattle) where my daughter Cher was born.  From there, I landed a plumb job in Tyler and stayed there long enough for our son Bob to claim a Texas birth.  In 1956 I became a KLIFDWELLER, moved on to WKBW, WLS, etc . I returned to Dallas in the '80s to be operations manager for KLUV in Dallas and KBUC in San Antonio, finally settling in as manager of KBUC.  So, I guess that should earn me the right to at least "one seat" at this gathering.  Art Roberts

Pl
ease accept my regrets at not being able to attend........I must attend to some urgent family matters...... Please send my regards to those who don't still hate me.  And please, tell all the jocks who where on the air during my fifteen minutes of Program Director-hood, that   I'M SORRY FOR TAKING THE HOP PLUGS OFF THE AIR!!!!!   I KNOW YOU DUG THE BREAD.......BUT THEY REALLY DID SUCK!   And tell Biff Burns he is a radio legend!  Warm, Personal BEAU-regards, Beau Weaver

Larry, I remember you taking me backstage at the TCCC to meet the Osmonds 30 years ago ... I finally found my calling ... at KZEE and KYXS ... That's when I got into news which is what I still do.  I'm also a traffic reporter on KRLD ... and at Metro.  I'm looking forward to seeing you and meeting Marky Baby and others I listened to as a kid.  It'll also be great to see some folks I've worked with but haven't seen in several years.  Kym West

Here is a note for those interested in taped KFJZ memories
I just recalled that  when I retired from radio I gave a big box of tapes to the library at UT Arlington.   I have no idea what they were or what they did with them.  If anyone cares enough to check it out , there might be some fascinating memories in all of that.  On the other hand, maybe UTA threw them away.  David L. Day

Hey! You guys think you can put on a bash at Joe T's and not expect the Star Reporter of the 70's?? I will be there to recount how I made money from KFJZ with the 1st issue of MAD magazine (which I still have!) and I will be wearing Joe Holstead's hat! Best to all!   Jim Marrs

Contrary to rumors, I am not missing. I am alive and well, and living in sub-tropical South Texas. It pleases me to see that a gathering of us hoary (whorey?) old-timers from JZ and TSN is being planned.  Yes, of course I will be there.   Ed Miller

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to Ben Laurie for putting me on to the reunion -- of course, I wouldn't miss seeing that wonderful list of folks that I used to work with at JZ and elsewhere! Jay Ward
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Count on me being with you, Ken and all the gang at Joe T's on the 27th. It will be great fun to visit with dear friends I worked and competed with one more time.  All are special to me for being a part of my life in that wonderful thing we enjoy so much called broadcasting.  Rusty Reynolds

... as of today I won't need the ramp, thanks. I may even have my 2 front teeth by then!!!!  Didn't get 'em for Christmas." Jonathan Hayes

Just heard about the party this morning from someone at Metro Traffic Control. Having worked at KLIF in 1961 and 1966, KBOX in 1965, KXOL in two separate hitches for Earl Fletcher, and KIXL and WFAA when they were alive, I feel that I must join the group of folks that I've known over the years. Put me on the list! Looking forward to it! Still active, by the way, doing traffic reports for K-LUV and KRLD. Ben Laurie Metro/Shadow Networks

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KRLD/KVIL/KLIF/KJZY/KCUL ...One of  these stations should qualify me to get in the Joe T's door.  Plan on seeing you on the 27th. Great idea!  Happy New Year. Looking forward to seeing one and all!  Cordially, Hugh Lampman

My name is Sid Burns and I worked as an engineer at KFJZ / KFJZ-TV / KTVT-TV from 1956 to 1993. I was the Engineer for Porter Randall's 7am TSN newscast for a couple of years. I'm sure I can find a few KFJZ items for the reunion.  I called Paul Kittenbacker and told him about the reunion. See you guys at the Reunion... Sid and Peggy Burns
